Labiaplasty – Female genital reshaping
The BBC reported that last year more than 2000 labiaplasties were performed on the NHS, and the last five years has seen a fivefold increase. However, with increasing cutbacks on the NHS, treatments that are perceived as cosmetic may not continue to be funded.
A small number of women may feel unhappy with their labia especially if they are asymmetrical, long or slightly bulky, as it can have an impact on their life. Sometimes, women with large labia can experience pain during intercourse, or feel distress during daily activities or when wearing tight-fitting outfits e.g. trousers or undergarments. Others may feel unattractive, or wish to improve their sexual experiences by removing some of the skin that covers the clitoris. Some women are born with large labia, others might develop this with either childbirth or with age. The trend for more extreme pubic grooming leaves the labia more exposed – something which has also contributed to more women seeking reduction in their labia minora.

The procedure is surgical, taking place in an operating theatre under general anaesthetic, however in some cases, local anaesthetic with sedation can be used. The whole procedure takes about an hour.
The standard procedure is to reduce the size of the inner labia (the inner genital lips), the Surgeon will cut the unwanted labia tissue to make the desired shape. Or, the Surgeon can remove a wedge-shaped piece of the labia, leaving the front unchanged, only removing tissue from behind. This technique means there is no change to the colour of the labia and makes the surgery less noticeable.
You will experience mild discomfort and swelling, which generally disappears completely after 1 week in most cases, however for few it might, takes 2 weeks. You might think to take some time off from work to rest and will need to maintain a high standard of hygiene.
Labial incisions are rarely noticeable and the sutures used are dissolvable. We advise clients to wear a pad for a week or as required in case of any bleeding.
The labia will be reshaped to the desired look and the results are permanent. Clients should be aware that this procedure will not make the vagina smaller or tighter. In the vast majority of cases, there is no loss of sensation for you or your partner after the procedure; the procedure will just help you find improved confidence in your relationships and sexually.
After the surgery, the genital area will be swollen and somewhat painful, the surgical wounds will be healing during this time. For this reason, we advise against intercourse during this time. As with all surgical procedures, there is a risk of infection. However, if you keep the area clean and avoid sex in the first 6 weeks, the risk will be considerably minimized. There is also the risk permanent colour change and loss of sensation, however severe complication are rare.
As with any cosmetic procedure, it is important that you review your expectations thoroughly before you decide to go ahead with the surgery. Your specialist Surgeon will explain the outcomes you can expect, and will discuss the risks and alternatives to the procedure before going ahead at your consultation.
