Surgery ( Eye Bag & Eyelid Surgery or Eye bag Removal Surgery)
Eye Bag & Eyelid Surgery or Eye bag Removal Surgery or Blepharoplasty Surgery can be performed on the upper or lower eyelids, or both if necessary. Your eyesight will be assessed before surgery along with your ability to produce tears. During blepharoplasty surgery a local anaesthetic is usually used along with a sedative.
During surgery, incisions are made around the skin of the eyelid which loosens the skin and muscle. This is then removed with further cutting. Fine sutures are used to close the incisions leaving fine lines across the eyelid. These normally heal and fade to very fine, almost indistinguishable marks within three months. The surgery usually lasts between one to two hours. In order to reduce inflammation and discomfort an ophthalmic cream is applied to the eyelid area underneath dressings which are soaked in a cold saline solution.
Later Progress
The area around your eye will be swollen for around a week and you may find your eyes are sensitive to light for a few weeks. Other side effects include watering eyes and visual fluctuations which should pass within a few weeks. After this time you should be able to see the results of your surgery, with your younger fresher appearance.
You will usually be able to return to your day to day life within eight to ten days. After your blepharoplasty surgery it is vital that you follow the aftercare instructions given to you by the clinic and make sure that you attend all follow up appointments.
Recovery
Recovery from eye bag removal, whether on the lower or upper eyelids, typically requires some time off from work. It is needed to facilitate the healing process. Therefore, expect your surgeon to create a personalized guidance plan related to your recovery and the duration you will require from work to ensure you are on the path to recovery.
But here are some general guidelines that patients who undergo eyelid/ eye bag removal surgery should follow:
- Refrain from driving for at least three to five days following the operation.
- Avoid strenuous activities like intense fitness training, heavy lifting and swimming, at least during the early stages of your recovery.
- Avoid Smoking or wearing contact lenses. This is needed to promote optimal healing.
- Some people after Blepharoplasty may experience bruising and redness around their eyes for nearly two to three weeks following the surgery. Scars may be noticeable initially, but they fade and heal over time.
- Furthermore, to ensure healing, it is advisable to avoid rubbing your eyes to prevent irritation. If you adhere to these guidelines, you will recover comfortably and smoothly.
Aftercare
Here are the aftercare protocols to follow once you undergo the eye bag removal surgery:
- Make sure to use drops or ointment to clean your eyes.
- Wear your sunglasses to protect your eyes from wind, dust, and sunlight. This will promote the healing process.
- Take prescribed pain medication, like paracetamol, for managing pain or discomfort.
- If you have swelling, it is best to use cold packs. This will alleviate discomfort and reduce swelling. Also, maintain a raised head position while resting to minimize swelling and promote optimal healing.
