What is Laser Acne Treatment

Acne can be distressing and unsightly sometimes causing embarrassment and social anxiety. Lasers can be used effectively to reduce the number and severity of outbreaks, reducing redness, inflammation and reoccurrence.

Acne is normally caused by overactive sebaceous glands meaning excessive amounts of sebum. This sebum blocks the skin’s pores and hair follicles producing white heads, black heads, spots, cysts, inflammation and discoloration.
Lasers target these overactive glands, producing noticeable improvement to an outbreak and greatly reducing the number and severity of future outbreaks. The laser will also stimulate collagen production, which can improve the appearance of skin, its texture and any areas of discoloration.

Before your treatment, we request that you come in and have a chat to one of our practitioners to check your suitability, set a treatment plan and perform a patch test.

The Procedure

Before the treatment, a cold gel is applied to help minimize sensitivity and get the best results from the treatment. The laser is applied to the skin in small sections until all the affected area is treated.

Treatments take approximately 30 minutes and can be combined with a skin peel to maximize the treatment effects. Depending on the area to be treated and we normally recommend a course of 4-6 sessions spaced approximately 6 weeks apart.

Later Progress

The treatment is mildly uncomfortable and the laser has been described as feeling like “pin pricks.” You may wish to take analgesia such as paracetamol prior to treatment to minimize any discomfort.

After treatment, skin will appear quite red and feel “tingly”, however this will subside in a few hours. Rarely, some people may notice temporary, slight, skin discolouration and develop small blisters in the treated area. If these occur, they will heal in a short time.
